Virus deselecting my active window every min

December 26, 2009 at 18:09:49
Specs: Windows XP, Athlon 3500+ / 1.0 Gigs RAM
I accidentally installed a malicious "anti-malware" program that popped up when I was browsing the internet. I tried to uninstall it, but it was too late. Now, whenever I have a window active, it deselects about once every minute, minimizing games, deselecting my browser, etc.

I tried to run malwarebytes, but I believe the virus won't let me run the program.

I also use security task manager, but have been unable to find anything using it. I have Hijack this, and can post a log if that would seem useful.

Thank you so much in advance for any advice!

Have you tried rebooting into Safe Mode and running malwarebytes. If not, what specifically happens? That usually seems to work.

Hi Ryan, Thanks for the reply!

It turns out the virus won't let me go into safe mode... I select safe mode, it starts to load, but then stops and goes back to normal mode. I can install maleware bytes in regular windows, but it will not run. Any further help would be appreciated.

Perhaps boot into a Linux/BartPE type live cd, or connect the drive to another computer with a USB adapter. Then you can run a MalwareBytes scan on the drive to remove the malware executables and/or load the registry hives and remove any references to those files.
