Depending on the computer, you're using, I would concider Windows XP.
Windows ME was one of the worst OS, Microsoft ever created, as well as Windows Vista.
Also consider, that when downgrading to Windows 95, there is no further support like security patches for it.

If you downgrade, 98SE would be a better choice than 95 (but as mentioned, you may have enough horsepower for XP or at least 2K)...

Hi pchelp4u,
It sounds like you may have a HD that is going south. If you have another HD, try an install with ME and see if that works for you.
I find that when the errors keep adding up that the HD is becoming worn out. I would NEVER go back to win95, that would be like taking time travel back to the stone age.

See if anyone has a Dell XP install disc and maybe up-grade to that.

BUT
We have NO idea of how big your processor is, the ram in the PC,etc which response 1 asked for.

I can't tell you on how to get a working XP number in this forum as we are not allowed to do that...sorry.

I have a dell xp disk because I am a kid and when my family got a new computer they gave me the old one. The new one is a dell with xp home edition. The only oporating systems in my house are 95, ME and Xp but I think it is to slow for Xp. Here are the specs. IT is a GATEWAY select 1200 pc with an AMD Athlon 1200MHZ processor, 128MB memory, and a 40gb 7m ultra ATA hard drive. Is that to upgrade to XP.

you will need more memory. check ebay or craigslist and see about a cheap price on memory. Be sure to upgrade to at least 512 to get XP to run properly.
Your processor is large enough, no problem

But likely the OEM Dell XP disc wouldn't work anyway. Specific-manufacturers' discs look for a string in the BIOS to match the machine it's trying to be installed on (thus a Dell disc wouldn't likely work in an Gateway machine)
