starting in safe mode

January 15, 2010 at 10:00:40
Specs: Windows XP
I have a virus somewhere in my computer. I have run malwarebytes and superantispyware. These are coming up clean. I have read several blogs saying to restart the computer in safe mode and then run the scans, but my computer will not boot in safe mode. When I click on safe mode it just restarts and boots normally. How can I get what is infecting my computer off???

Just to clarify - you say you 'click on safe mode' - in the start
menu it should be a keyboard-only choice, and you only get the
option to 'click' once you are in safe mode and choosing between
'continue in safe mode' or 'do a system restore'. Please describe
the actual method you're using to get to safe mode and the point
at which it restarts.

I am pressing F8 to get the option to boot in safe mode, safe mode with networking and safe mode with command prompt. If I select any of these options the computer restarts and will only procede if I boot normally.

Ok, that's clearer. The virus may have altered the registry key
that allows safe mode - have a look here for the keys you need to check.
Get back if you find you cannot get regedit to run, there's a fix for
that as well.

That site doesn't tell me what it is I am ooking for. When I expand the minimal and the network folders there is a long list but I do know what I need to be looking for. Nothing in either folder says disabled

So can you get in to check the registry?

I seem to be able to everything except boot in safe mode. I really need to find this virus that keeps redirecting all my web searches.

To repeat, can you run 'regedit' to check registry settings?
