Just ignore them. No point in trying to engage with scammers. They are probably much better at this sort of thing than you are.

Obtaining the IP address is probably not possible and even if you did obtain it there is almost nothing you can do with it. Also be aware that the scammer may not be using his own Internet connection.

oh...a domestic quarrel...that's a tough one! Jealousy does pretty bad things, especially when used in anger. Start by blocking him from messenger

As another thought, you may want to figure out where the click box is for keeping message logs, and you may want to not reply to his messages, even though there is anger there.

"i simply want the information for tracking purposes for the authorities"

If you are going to report this then leave it up to the authorities to trace the miscreant (if they think it is worth doing). They know how to do it, which you don't, and have access to facilities that you don't.

But if you know who it is, why do you need the IP address? And if you know that it is happening how can they scam you?

As I said to start with, just ignore it.

I wanted the IP address for tracking purposes as this person I was engaged to is not who he said he was very obviously. It is a very long story but sufice it to say I was scammed out of more than $3500 in advanced payment of a wire transfer from him to me for the purchase of a home. the funds haven't materialized, i had to break the contract of sale & now our relationship is over because i refused to pay any more advanced fees. Pretty much feel I was scammed...

You don't need an IP address. All you need to do is provide the authorities with his contact information (name, address, etc.) and let them do their jobs.

Good luck.
