Someone is harassing my friend. How can I find their IP

Specs: Windows 7
Someone is harassing my friend. I set up an IP tracker on her webpage that they're harassing her on (calling her a fat c**t, etc). The webpage is through a free web page address. The person doing this is using a proxy server. Is there a way to trace her original IP address?

Thanks!

Knowing that original IP address won't do you much good. All it can tell you is their ISP and general geographical location (city), and you can't count on that being accurate either. The IP address will not provide personal details about who is using it. Only law enforcement can do that. And even then there are some simple methods that are virtually untraceable, even by law enforcement.

This is a criminal offence. Don't try to take the law into your own hands. Report this to your local police.

Criminal offence. Well, should have added an option of blocking such people on the website. Hand over this matter to the police, ijack is right.

Why not filter out such garbage? Law enforcement cannot do much, rarely has the time to do so, and if it is coming from another country, or through proxy servers and/or hacked servers/boxes, not much will get done. Free usually means minimal support. But filter code is freely available as well :-)
