Should I scan downloaded software files?

Specs: Windows XP, Celeron 512MB
Should I really scan downloaded software for virus ? Are they likely to get infected ? The reason I am asking is because it takes a lot of time to scan these files (say Lotus Symphony, OpenOffice & other large files).

"Should I really scan downloaded software for virus"
1: No, as long as you know the download site is 100% Safe I use Softpedia.

Perhaps it would be best to have the av scan the whole system on a time based formula...say for example daily at 6 am, then it wont interfere with what you do during the rest of the day.

Once the file is downloaded & installed, is it necessary to scan the downloaded file now & then ?
