Security Update KB979683 Won't Install...?

April 17, 2010 at 16:12:57
Specs: Windows XP
Hey there

I've been trying to install this security update that Windows keeps saying I need, but the installation always fails. I included the log, but it doesn't make any sense, nor does the "help" on Microsoft website.

Can someone help me, and explain it like you would to a 5 year old?

Thanks!

Probably far too hopeful and simple but:

Get all the other updates then "reboot".
Clear Temporary Internet Files then try the obstinate one again.

I followed your instructions, going as far as to install the ever-so-handy CCleaner to do a thorough cleanup (took a while, you could probably imagine). No dice, sadly.

Thanks, though.

It seems that quite a few folk are having problems with this update. You have to follow the rather convoluted process given as "method 3" on this website:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822...
Shout back if there is anything you don't understand.

It might be worth holding off for a week just to make sure MS don't come up with an improved version - but don't hold your breath.

Yeah, I'll try holding off for a week - it's just not cooperating with me.

I was dealing with a particularly nasty piece of malware that was causing my search engine to misdirect. Once I got that cleared up, it installed no problem.

So if I were you I'd check your search engines as well as try to find any malware that may be giving you problems.

Here's the thread that got the malware cleared up.
