On some routers (eg Netgear models) the factory default wireless key is also printed on a sticker underneath it or on the back of it.
It's the same key you entered on your laptop to connect to your network.
The key prevents your neighbours or someone outside your house from using your wireless connection for free internet access. Also stops them from changing your router settings - - so yes, you do need to have a wireless key (unless you don't care who accesses your router with a WiFi device).
