Search Results and AV blocked

March 25, 2009 at 10:08:20
Specs: Windows XP
My husband recently contracted a virus and I'm trying everything I know, but I keep getting blocked. The virus hijacks search results and bogs down the system as well as blocks attempts to download AVs.

I've ran Housecall's online scan and it found Mal_otorun1 but it cannot clean it. It did find 15 other grayware and removed them.

I cannot download any new AV online or exe file. I've tried MalwareBytes and Kesperski(sp?)

I don't know what else to do other than to format. Could this be the go.google.com virus?

Thanks!
Cecilia

You may want to download these three progs on another PC, maybe put them on a thumb drive or cd and install them on the problem PC, all free and located in the link on my signature, and I would suggest unplugging your internet and then run them in this order:
1- Ccleaner Slim, remove all it finds
2- Malwarebytes remove all it finds
3- Avast free, also download the uptodate updates, install it and let it do a bootscan on reboot and move all it finds to the chest.
That should clean it out for you and get you back on track. Then I would suggest unloading the AV you are using now as you cannot run two AV's at the same time, they will conflict.

I would do that in a heart beat, however whatever this virus is blocks updates for any AV/Spyware. It has completely blocked ESET and Spy Bot from even opening on this computer. Both were installed before he got this.

the updates can be downloaded for avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/updates.html
for the other 2, just run them as they are.

Well we got the virus eradicated, but not using the methods you had indicated. We never could get avsat* to work.

We had to download and run Avenger2 from swandog, then we were able to run malwarebytes.com. Doing that is what worked.
