Microsoft Windows xp professional w/serv...

Specs: Windows XP, 2GB
Same symptoms as typical, click on search engine results and get sent somewhere else (though sometimes not).

Chrome is completely dead (only Aw snap! page)
Firefox severely compromised, either it gets bombed by sketchy pages and freezes, attempts to go places that will fix this (forum posts, firefox add-ons, etc) and freezes, or shuts down automatically after a minute or two if you stay on a "safe" page. In all cases, can't restart Firefix until you manually killt he process in the task manager.
IE sorta works, but can only run one web page at any time, and of course the search engine redirecting.***Update...IE dies (just loads indefinitely) and then works again periodically.

McAfee turns up nothing, safe mode gets me blue screen. Tried disk cleanup, didn't fix. Downloaded malewarebytes, but didn't want to install and run before I checked with people here. **Update- Ran malwarebytes, found some objects, quarantined...but didn't help problem.

Install and run malwarebytes - you can even do it in Safe Mode. Once you get the system operable again, download the latest definitions and run it again.

Just ran it, found a couple registry values and items, quarantined it...but didn't fix problem. No change. IE came back up, but that was before running malwarebytes.

Also ran IOBit Security 360, found some cookies, got rid of, didn't fix either.

**Update: installed a slew of programs overnight. Threatfire doesn't come up with anything, neither does ad-aware. Uninstalled McAfee and switched to hot off presses Avast, which found a bunch of trojans and a rootkit in the startup boot scan. Fixed some, but not all the problems:

Currently: Google Chrome works, Firefox also works and is no longer blocked from accessing helpful sites or auto-shutting. Installed No-Script, as the redirecting is still happening.
