Specs: Windows 7, don't know
Hi. I don't chat much but my kids do. I'm wondering if someone can record a video chat without them knowing it. Also I'm wondering if there is a way or a program to block someone from recording them?
Thanks in advance

Hi Kim,

If I understand your question correctly, it's possible to record a video chat but I doubt there is a way to stop someone on the other end, from recording them. Search Google, for video chat recorders.

guapo I was wondering if someone can record a video chat *without* you knowing...I don't want ppl recording my kids without their knowledge....
And I was wondering if there was some kind of *blocking* program out there that could prevent anyone from recording video chats without the other's consent...
Can you tell me which programs ppl might use to record?
It's creepy to think that ppl might be recording this way....
Thanks again for your advice!!

A quick search on Google for recording video chats brought up quite a few hits. You can easily do this yourself. It appears that these programs work by recording the screen image. I can't imagine how you could prevent this from being done on someone else's computer. If something appears on the screen it can be recorded. But just for interest I did a search for that too. The only hit was on a forum where the poster was told it was impossible.

LMiller7 is correct. There is no way that you can stop someone else from recording, on a remote computer. That's any computer not in your house.

I chat on IRC all the time. (not video, just text) Many of the others log everything that's said. Basically, anything I say will be out there forever. At the same time, they don't know my true identity & it would take court orders to trace me.

In the early days of telephone, there was a saying. If you don't want it known, don't use the phone. The same holds true for today's technology.

guapo I have a daughter who is beautiful and loves to show it lol....I get worried about her though and I think she is an easy target for someone who is untrustworthy, you know...she's only 18 and doesn't consider what others might do....if someone ever created a program to block other ppl from recording her or stealing her pics, that person would be a millionaire or more lol

Kim, I don't know about the millionaire thing but I understand your concerns. Similar situations have been posted before. People like yourself look to technology for protection but they should be looking at education instead. By that, I mean that teaching the children how to be "street wise" is a much better approach. So, if you alert your daughter to possible scams & the like, you will be far more protected than depending on technology. Does that make sense?

guapo you are so right....and I have been warning her for a long time telling her that ppl might steal her fb pics and use them in a bad way....she knows how I'm worried in this way but I don't think it affects her online choices :( ....I just hope she understands that she should always keep the clothes on no matter what jaja....I'm so paranoid about seeing her in a not-good way lol....life at this age was so much easier back in the day lol....

Teaching her how to protect herself goes beyond online choices. Don't just focus on that. It has to be a complete picture. At the same time, what I call electronic footprints are left by internet users everyday. You leave them too.
