Resycled\ntldr.com - extl harddisk

Specs: Windows XP, Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz 2.99GHz, 1.00 GB RAM
Hi - I'd be grateful if you can help me. How can I remove the 'J:\resycled' folder and 'ntldr.com' file from my external hard drive (J:\)? Norton Antivirus doesn't report any problem when I do a full system scan. After reading other posts, I've downloaded and scanned with Malwarebytes' AntiMalware and the log file reports no infections but the J:\resycled folder and files still show in Explorer. Also I get an alert on the System Tray of the Task Bar: "Windows -Delayed Write Failed. Windows unable to save all data for file J:\$Mft....." Is this part of the same problem or something different? I'd really appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks Dave297

Please download and install the latest version of HijackThis v2.0.2:

Download the "HijackThis" Installer from this link:
Hijack This

1. Save " HJTInstall.exe" to your desktop.
2. Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
4. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
5.Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
6. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
7. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
8. Paste the log in your next reply.
9. Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Combofix is a powerful tool so follow the instructions exactly or you could damage your computer.

Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with Combofix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on This Link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

In your case to run Combofix do the following:
1. Go offline turn off your Norton antivirus, Spybot, Ad-Aware and any other antispyware that you may have.
2. Run Combofix and save its log.
3. Restart the computer to get the antivirus running again but leave the antispyware programs off until we get the computer cleaned.
4. Post the Combofix log.

Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Double-click combofix.exe
Follow the prompts.
(Don't click on the window while the program is running or move the mouse, it will cause your system to hang.)
Please post the log it produces.

Open Notepad and copy/paste everything between the X's into it and make sure the first word (such as KILLALL, File, Folder, Registry etc.) is at the very top of the page.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{704c467e-acb1-11dd-aba9-000cf614b040}]

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Go to File on the top bar and choose" Save As", Change the "Save As Type" to All Files, Name it CFScript.txt then save it to your desktop.
Then drag/drop the CFScript.txt onto ComboFix.exe (the red symbol on your desktop) if combofix does not auto start click "run".

Empty the restore folder. Go to start>control panel>system>system restore tab>check the box beside "turn off system restore>apply (takes a minute)>ok. Go back and uncheck the box to turn system restore back on>apply>ok.

Download ATF Cleaner from this link:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html
Run ATF-Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Run an online scan with Kaspersky from the following link:
Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
2. Click Run at the Security prompt.
The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
3.Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
4. Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
5. Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
6. Click View scan report at the bottom.
7. Click the Save Report As... button.
8. Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.
**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
Close any open programs.
Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

I'm having trouble downloading the Kaspersky scanner. When I accept the licence, it opens the next window but the download doesn't start - the indicator stays at 0%. Is there another download site I could try? I'm nervous at leaving NAV switched off all this time - and no scan running.

Try this scanner.

Please run Esets online scanner from this link:

ESET

1. Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
2. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
3. Click Start
4. When asked, allow the activex control to install
5. Click Start
6. Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked ( I want to see what is found first), and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
7. Click Scan
8. Wait for the scan to finish
9. Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
10. Copy and paste that log in your next reply.

Navigate to and delete this file:

H:\Documents and Settings\Mike\My Received Files\video of me(1).exe

Your computer appears to be clean other than the above file.

Go to start> run> type in combofix /u (note the space after combofix) then press enter> run. This will uninstall combofix so give the uninstaller a minute to run.

Go to start> control panel> add/remove programs and uninstall these programs:

Hijack This

Malwarebytes

Eset

You should keep AFT Cleaner and run it weekly.

You should consider adding "Spywareblaster" to your arsenol of antispyware tools, you can download it from this link Spywareblaster

Just download it,install it, and update it. Its free and runs in the background, so you don't actually run it, and re-writes malicious script before it can install on your computer. Look for updates weekly as there is no auto-update on the free version.

How is the computer operating?

Hi. I've completed all that and the computer seems OK. However, I have a couple of questions that I'd appreciate your comments on:

Although I can now 'see' the folders and files on my Seagate USB external hard drive (J:\), I can't open them, neither can I write anything to the J:\ drive. I get an error message which reads:

"Windows Delayed Write Failed
Windows unable to save all data for file J:\$Mft. This error may be caused by failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere." (which under the circumstances I'd be worried about doing!)

The filename after the $ changes if I try to read or save a specific file - but not necessarily to the filename in question!?

I did get a Seagate Freeagent Drive error report which prompted me to investigate the drive more closely which is when I noticed
the resycled\ntldr.com files and posted this problem. The message advised me to contact Seagate.com with the Serial No., so I suppose it could be a genuine hardware failure. What do you think?

Also, I've noticed that my internal drive is working away reading and writing - apparently for no reason. Is this normal?

Thanks for all your help and assistance so far.

Click the following link for some good reading on your drive error.

http://www.gibni.com/windows-delayed-write-failed-solved

As for the internal drive I don't see anything that could be causing it to be continually running. You can look in task manager (press ctrl, alt, delete) then click the processes tab to see what is the memory.

Thanks for the link. However, I think my system hs been re-infected! If I use My Computer to examine the external USB hard drive (J:\) or a USB flash drive (I:\) I get a message that "Windows cannot find the resycled\ntldr.com file ..." If I 'explore' the drives I don't see the 'resycled' folder like I did before - even though I have set it to show hidden files and folders. Any suggestions? Should I go through the previous 'scan and log' processes or do we need to start over? Sorry to be such dimwit but your help is very much appreciated!

Lets look in the registry and see what is calling for baddie.

Download Registry Search and doubleclick to start it. Enter resycled\ntldr.com in the top edit box and click "Ok". Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file will be saved in the program's folder as well). Post this text.

Hi

OK thanks again for your help! It hasn't been easy but by using your previous message I have been able to overcome several re-infections - everytime from my external USB hard drive which has the read/write fault. I've now disconnected the drive totally (it contains my full system and data file backup - but I guess that's my problem to resolve as the drive is still under warranty) and satisfied myself that the system including my USB pen drive is clean.

Thanks again for all your advice and assistance - I don't know who you are or where you - but you are one of the unsung heroes of the internet in my book! Keep doing what you do - the world needs more willing helpers like you. Best regards, Dave297
