recover user passwords (incl ADMIN)

January 26, 2011 at 13:11:54
Specs: Windows 7
We have had the administrative rights changed on all of our home computers (mostly laptops) and need to recover/reset all the USER PASSWORDS (including the ADMIN) but cannot download tools or burn CDs. (using Windows 7 and XP)

HELP.

I'd also like to WIPE these computers clean and start fresh to try to remove the malware this hacker has installed into our computers and wifi.

If you are going to wipe the hard drives, there is no reason to recover passwords.

Ok but Im not even sure how to "wipe" the hard drives since I am unable to download software to do so. But until I can get another copy of XP I simply need to recover Passwords so I can Back Up data as I currently do not have permission to see most of my directories.

On the windows 7 laptops, you can probably just hit F11 to access the recovery partition. That will put the machine back to it's original condition. Then you can download whatever you want.

How is it that the permissions on your entire network were changed? That doesn't sound like a remote hack. It sounds like an inside job. Do I smell a divorce?

LOL, CLOSE - my ex boyfriend set up my network and unbeknownst to me had my entire network routed thru a WAN. I have changed routers and wiped pcs down to DOS but have not had luck keeping them safe.

I knew I was on the right track. Once you wipe all drives & do clean installs, all remote access will be gone, as long as you don't enable anything.

If you need to recover files first, there are ways to do it. One is boot with a Live CD & another is to use a USB enclosure. They are too complicated to explain here. You might want to find someone you can trust to help you.
