Please help! Computer keeps crashing.

Specs: Windows 7
My laptop keeps freezing. All windows stop working and have the "(not responding)" message. Even Cntl Alt Del will not work. In the end I just have to hold down the power button until it powers down.
Freezing occurs when I look in the DOWNLOADS folder and also when I try to transfer some work files to a external hard drive (moving always stops at the same spot).
Other things work fine, the computer has plenty of spare memory and runs fairly swiftly.
I have downloaded and run spybot and deleted the various bits it found, run the disk cleanup and defrag.
Not sure if I have accidently downloaded some virus or what.
Anyone have any ideas? would appreciate any advice.

Try looking at the startup list. It is found in start, run, msconfig, startup tab. Uncheck everything that you do not need.

Thanks for the reply. I'm afraid I can't seem to do that, I can't see the "run" option in the start menu. My applogies, i'm not that good with computers.
