My new (1 week old) HP laptop boots up and a bogus password fills in. It appears to be a continuous repeat of the letter u. I can't delete it or change it. I tried the F8 key and got to the boot mode selection screen, but then my keyboard locks up and I can't get any further. It eventually boots again in normal mode and starts all over again. Is there anything else I can do? Would an external usb keyboard work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the keyboard may be bad. Try using an external keyboard and see if it fixes the issue. Also check to see if any of the keys are stuck on the keyboard. Was anything spilled on the laptop? If so, it may be causing a short in the keyboard without there being an actual stuck key.
