open with virus won't let me open downloads

Specs: Windows XP
Hey,

I got a virus after responding to a security message and now I get the "open with" message every time I try to open a file or program. I can run the internet, word processer, itunes, etc because they're all on the list but I can't open files that I've downloaded to install or run them because I don't know what to open them with when the window pops up.

I ran AVG while in safe mode and it picked up a few things, but my computer is still acting strangely. I downloaded exefix and added it to my registery but i didn't see a change even after restarting it. Any tips for a gal who can't run exe files?

Have you had anymore "security messages" pop up?

vashonwhitney, Since you're using Windows XP try the possible fix in Reply #1 in the thread at the link below.

No. I just ran malwarebytes and it found a few things. After I rebooted Windows Security let me know that it was shut off from updates though.

Tufenuf,
There was no download there, just a lot of script. Should I copy and paste it somewhere?

vashonwhitney, Follow the instructions I posted in my previous Reply #2 but use Internet Explorer and right click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP", choose "Save Target As" then save it to your Desktop then follow the instructions I posted in my previous Reply.
