Only TrendMicro and ClamAV report positive?

June 30, 2010 at 09:30:48
Specs: Windows XP SP3
Hi,

I've used VirusTotal.com to scan a file and out of all 40 services, only TrendMicro and ClamAV report a virus. I have Avira AntiVir installed on my WinXP SP3 PC, which also can't find anything wrong with the .exe in question.

How reliable are TrendMicro and ClamAV vs. all the other anti-virus scanners that don't find anything, including Avira on my desktop? I.e. how likely is it that this a false positive?

- ClamAV found this: PUA.Packed.MinGWGCCDLL.2xx

- TrendMicro found this: TROJ_Gen.MZ40L8

Thank you so much in advance!
Matt

... these use multi antivirus scans upload and test (report displayed):

http://www.virustotal.com/

http://virscan.org/

... you may get a false positive if the settings are too high!

Thanks for your reply mavis, but I think you misunderstood my question. I already scanned the file with virustotal (your first link) and it reported 2 positives only - all other engines reported negative.

I also just scanned the file with virscan.org (your 2nd link) - there was a report from about 1 year ago on the same file, which had 0 found viruses.

My question is just about the probability of false positives from TrendMicro / ClamAV, which are the only two services who "found something".

Thanks.

I just download Myfasterpc.com - and scanned with Virustotal

http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/...

It found the same malicious PUA.Packed.MinGWGCCDLL.2xx

I believe its a malicious registry program that has annoying pop-ups on boot
