Solved no internet connectivity... reinstalled os twice

March 14, 2012 at 13:59:27
Specs: Windows XP Pro SP3, Core 2 Duo/4G ddr2
I was originally running windows 7 enterprise 32 bit and I got a virus that caused my internet to not work (assuming from a torrent which I do not download anymore). Internet connections showed as fine and my ISP said that they were viewing the modem as working fine. I ran ad aware and avast free and could not find any problems. I then reformatted my hdd and installed windows XP pro. Everything was fine, updated to SP3, and reinstalled all software. Everything continued to work until connectivity was again dropped in the middle of streaming a show online. At this point, I thought the video hosting site might be the offender. Again, connection in control panel showed fine. I once again did a reformat and clean install of XP and updated to SP3 and reinstalled virus protection. Computer worked fine with internet for two days (first day using my friend's internet at his house). Brought it home second day and proceeded to play CS:S all night. Shut down my PC then I woke up this morning to find internet connectevity issue back. I think this might be a rootkit that has persisted on my mobo or in my router/modem. I have reset modem/router to factory settings. Any ideas? Fixes? Posted this question from my smartphone...

Somehow, everything is working now... strange...

Perhaps I didn't wait long enough for the reset, we'll see if this sticks...

you would be best off to at least run a quick scan using Malwarebytes and fix all it finds.
If you have a rootkit, there are more ways to remove it.
