No desktop, no icons, no TASK MANAGER!

September 10, 2010 at 17:46:00
Specs: Windows XP Media Center Edition, Intel Centrino Duo
Upon restarting my computer, because of adware/virus issues, I return to the desktop only to find that there are no icons, no task bar, no start menu - NOTHING. Moreover, I cannot right click, as suggested in many other posts and ctrl+alt+delete will not call up the task manager function. I have tried started in safe mode, as well as logging in through administrator and guest accounts. Basically once the computer starts up and logs in, it has no functionality. Is there any fix for this?

Is there anyway you can use the recovery disc that came with your laptop?.. If not, try this:

Download the Remove Restriction Tool(kit) from here and run it:

Then download Rkill from here: , and after running it, DO NOT reboot as this will cause the malware to restart: (Rkill is a malicious process killing tool that kills any malicious process running temporarily).

Thirdly download Malware Bytes, update it (if possible), and then run a scan to see what it finds:

You can also try the follow fix from Doug Knox's website here: which will re-enable access to the Task Manager.
