No access to folders

Specs: Windows 7, U4100 @ 1.3Ghz / 4 GB RAM
okay so my laptop was working fine before i turned it off. When i turned it on again, i wanted to turn on ventrillo, but all saved information like server ip etc.. was not saved anymore like it used to. i checked my folders, and noticed that the application data folder, my document, recent, cookies etc.. had the shortcut icons on them, i believe they werent there before, they showed as regular folder icons before, i might be wrong, but i couldnt access any of those folders. It just says C:/users/.... is not accessible, Access is denied.
my laptop seems slow now too. i didnt download anything new, no updates and such either, and like i said, before turning it off, everything worked fine like it always did, so this is very strange to me. i ran hijack this, but my logfile seems fine, anyone has any idea what this could be? couldnt find anything on google

I googled "folders changed to shortcuts Windows 7" and got plenty of hits, this one for example:

It's caused by a virus.
MalwareBytes freebie might fix it but see what other responses you get on here as it might need more specialist attention.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
