|A lot of these 'nasty viruses' are actually malware - their main |
aim is to stop things working on your computer & then
try & get money out of your in order to 'remove' them.
First step is to stop them from running in the first place:
Restart the computer in safe mode - do the pop-ups etc.
appear?. If not, run 'msconfig', look through the list of
programs under the 'startup' tab and remove the tick from any
suspect ones (use a bit of common sense to make your
decision - for exampe, anything beginning 'hp' refers to your printer,
anything that looks like total gibberish is possibly a nasty!)
Restart the computer - have the pop-ups/problems stopped?
Next, install CCleaner - use the tools/startup section to
permanently remove the startup items that you found with
msconfig. While you're there run the filecleaner and the
registry cleaner, just for the hell of it.
Next, install, update and run Malwarebytes - remove anything
Reboot. Now you need to review what security you have on
your system. Remove any trace of McAfee!!!. Kaspersky and
latest versions of Norton are the best paid-for security
programs. Microsoft Security Essentials is probably the best
of the free 'all-round' security suites. Install & scan.
The above will restore a large percentage of infected systems.
Give it a go.
