multible mshta.exe processes in task manager

October 30, 2010 at 17:02:59
Specs: Windows XP sp1
24 mshta.exe processes running in task manager at the same time. i have zonealarm firewall installed and get a lot of alerts that Microsoft (R) Application host is requesting internet access . I have never had this before, so I denied access.I have several antivirus and antispyware programs and they don't find anything that seems to stop this process from starting and multiplying it's self again.

I get the same thing in Win XP, SP3. I can delete mshta.exe from C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache and C:\WINDOWS\system32 (there's a copy in both places) and it will be re-created in both places in just a few seconds. Multiple instances of the task often appear in the task list in Task Manager. Killing them seems to do nothing except save memory space. I never noticed them before I got a trojan horse a few weeks ago. The trojan has been cleaned, but this problem remains. I get tired of having to stop the tasks.

open scheduled task folder and you will probably discover y it keep adding itself delete entries with names similar to At1 and kill the processes in task manager and reboot this should solve the issue

THANK YOU !!!! This seems to have worked! I had tried everything else, and it would show back up. The tasks were listed as AT1.job thru AT24.job There was also an antispyware program that I did not recognize, so i deleted it too. The dates associated with these corresponded to the same time that got infected with microsoft security essentials. Which i was finally able to remove, ( or so i thought ) . anyway, God Bless You. thanks again, sharecropper.
