Microsoft Security Essentials on my pc wont o

Specs: Windows XP Professional
I have Microsoft Security Essentials on my PC which usually runs a nightly scan for viruses. This morning when I started up my computer, a pop up came up indicating i have a virus and need to download this antispy ware. When i tried to open up my microsoft program to do a scan, it said its off and then disappeared. Everytime I clicked on it to open, it would say its infected and close. I cant delete this pop up either. It performs a quick scan, says i have viruses and to delete them, i need to purchase this program. Any one else have this problem?

First: Don't give any software money or your credit card until you know its legitimate
second: this one is probably not!
third: its probably a program called "antispy safeguard" or a variation.

I would suggest that you look at this website:

or do a google search/ a search on this page for others that have had this problem.

if you need more help just reply or email. good luck

Almost certainly you had a pop-up from a bogus AV (a virus) that said you computer had multiple infections. It hadn't but by clicking on it you have now. This is widespread and quite frequent.

NEVER click on a popup of that type in future (don't even close its Window). You either End Task using Ctrl-Alt-Del keys or you reboot, preferably both. If you have CCleaner on board run that too.

After taking the advice already given in #1 it would be worth downloading, updating and running MalwareBytes free version to see if that can find anything else.
