Hi

I have PrevxEdge running on my laptop.

1. It keeps blocking malware; the same keeps resurfacing in a very short duration
2. I am not able to remove it. Prevx shows the affected file as c:\windows\system32\drivers\gmmljn.sys. I am not able to see this file thru explorer, even under hidden files
3. task manager is disabled
4.i am not able to go to safe mode; keeps rebooting; however able to open windows normally
5. i have scanned with Spyware terminator and pc tools threatfire; nothing detected.
6. pc has become very slow and unable to browse the net.
appreciate your help
regards
tsk

First of all, you should delete all temporary files.
Start > Run > Type TEMP click OK. Delete all.
Start > Run > Type %TEMP% click OK. Delete all.
Start > Run > Type prefetch click OK. Delete all.

You should run disk cleanup utility.
Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > Disk cleanup.

Tick mark all the boxes and click OK.

You should delete optimize internet explorer.
Open Internet explorer and Go to "tools" menu > Internet options. Delete cookies, Delete files, browsing history.
Select content tab and click on clear "SSL State". In advanced option click on "Restore defaults".

Try to download and install Malwarebytes.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Disable all unwanted startup and services.
Start > Run > Msconfig > services - disable all unwanted services from the list. Then select Startup tab and disable all unwanted startup from the list.

You should update all security software and uninstall all unwanted software or program through the Add/ Remove program.
Scan your computer with Malwarebytes.
And run disk defragment utility.
Start > programs > accessories > system tools > Disk Defragment.

Dear Rickyneck

While the laptop has become a bit more responsive, I am not not able to connect to the net at all. Though the LAN connection is established no traffic is being sent out.

thanks for your tips.

Tsk, you may have to download winsockfix or LSPfix to a thumbdrive on another PC and then run winsockfix first on the probloem PC.
That should get you back online. If it doesn't, then use the LSPfix.
Those free utilities can be found in the link of my signature under lost your connection. Good luck

Hi XPuser4real
thanks for ur post. when I tried Winsock it asked whether it cud backup the register entries. when I said "yes", it gave an error and none of the files could be backed up. I did not proceed with winsock further.
when i tried LSPfix it said the repairs were complete and returned the following msg:
0 namespace providers entries removed/renumbered
0 protocol provider entries removed/renumbered.
what does this mean?
thanks

your prevx doesn't seem to quarantine your infected files.
Try installing Avast Free and allow it to do a bootscan on reboot and move all it finds to the chest. That will probably work for you, sounds like you are still infected.

BTW gmmljn.sys is not found on google, I'm thinking that it is spyware of some sort.

I tried your suggestion. However the Avast installer is not able to install the files. renaming the installer does not help

Try installing Avast in safe mode.
Most malware can be cleaned using these free progs:
Malwarebytes
Ccleaner Slim
Super anti-spy
Spyware Blaster
Spybot S&D
Win Patrol
These are all found listed on one page in my signature to save you googling for them.
