Laptop suddenly went black, will not turn on

Specs: Windows 7
My brother was playing a game. The screen suddenly went blank. We have looked at other sites to try to find a solution- none of them will work. Before we had messages that the battery was coming to the end of it's usable life- not sure if this changes anything. The power cord light will come on but as soon as it is plugged into the computer the light goes off. My dad is getting ready to operate on the motherboard. Any suggestions that would start the computer up again without killing our hard drive? Thank you!

Did you try to run your laptop without battery just with power adapter? If not please try. And I guess we need more information about your problem to think and give solutions. Or just for me.

First before doing anything, remove the battery and try booting.
If that works, time to replace the battery.

If that does not work attempt repair via safe mode.
Tap F8 key as you are booting up. You will get an options screen.

Try the "Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)" first.

If that does not work try the "System Restore" option next
This option restores your computer's system files to an earlier point in time without affecting your files

For other options look here:

Also if you need a recovery CD as you do not have access to windows 7 DVD, there is a windows 7 recovery CD specially crafted for use in repairing PCs which will not even boot into safe mode.

For that look at post #1 in the following thread which is about Vista Recovery CD. However the same page also has a Windows 7 Recovery CD.

The problem is that we can't even get the machine to turn on... we tried holding power for like 3 minutes, taking out the battery and just using AC, etc. Nothing will work.
Thanks for the suggestions

Sorry!!! What other information do you need to know? It went black, nothing will turn on at all...
We have a Dell Inpsiron 1501 with Windows xp, not sure about CPU or anything.
We went away for the weekend and then my brother was on it for about 5 minutes when it suddenly just went black. We have not been able to restore it at all since then.

You could try a different power supply. The PSU might have died and hence no real power to the board.

Your initial comment seems to suggest that too:
The power cord light will come on but as soon as it is plugged into the computer the light goes off

If you have access to a voltmeter you could check the PSU output voltage. That reading would be conclusive if it shows low. However, if it shows the right voltage then remember that reading would be under no load conditions. The voltage might drop in a faulty PSU when load is applied but read correctly on no load.
