Specs: Windows XP
Hello everyone, please say someone can help me. It all started with a Windows XP Security Alert that would not go away. My room mate would just keep clicking the "x" and the computer was working fine. I called Microsoft and had them remotely remove the XP Security Alert since we have AVG on the computer. We ran an AVG scan and nothing was detected. Now the computer freezes up, won't let us get onto the internet (we use Mozilla), sometimes won't let the computer shut down, and when it does decide to work if you leave the computer for five minutes, it won't work anymore. Has anyone had this before? I have a paid subscription to Norton 360 and am thinking about installing that.

To be sure this problem is not caused by some sort of spyware or virus you should also scan your computer with a legitimate anti-spyware software. Choose from malwarebytes antimalware, superantispyware or spybot. All mentioned programs are free and does a great job at detecting and removing various computer infections. Download links could be found at: Download install and update before scanning. You may also want to enter safe mode before running a scan. Click Start, click Shut down, click Restart, click Ok. During your computer starting process press F8 key on your keyboard multiple times until you see Windows Advanced Option menu, then select Safe mode from the list.
When your computer is free from infections you may also want to clean and optimize your system. You could try CCleaner.

ThomasBearman's advice seemed to work for least so far. The newly updated Malwarebytes found 8 threats, which I deleted. Next time opened Netflix a brief flash of XP Security appeared on "startup bar"? then was replaced by Netflix. Hope it stays away. thx
