Placing a piece of malware in a vault, or quarantine, is the same as taking that file, and locking it away in jail and throwing out the key. It can't get out of the vault, and nothing but AVG can get in. It's not as secure as deleting the file, but if you're not sure whether or not what AVG detected was dangerous or not, it's a perfectly safe option to go with. Nothing can happen while that file is in the vault, and, if it turns out it isn't malicious, you can easily remove it from the vault.
