Invisible area to the left of the screen

Microsoft Windows xp home edition w/sp2

Specs: Windows XP
There is a big wide space beyond the left border of my computer screen which I can't see. I can move my mouse around in this hidden area, drag icons there etc, and every time I open any file or program, they appear in the invisible area beyond the border. To make them visible, I right click the taskbar, select move and drag it to the centre; and if I can't I have to randomly click and drag in the hope I hit the taskbar. The first time this happened, all the desktop icons were shunted into the invisible area.

I can't watch slideshows, enlarge videos to full screen, i.e. anything that involves the whole screen.

There was no obvious trigger, this problem happened suddenly. Display properties don't seem to be changed. Any suggestions or similar problems? Is this even a virus? Thanks.

It's probably not a virus. Have you tried adjusting the monitor?
