Solved infected computer won't open anything

June 6, 2013 at 08:45:08
Specs: Windows XP, unknown
My older desktop (I'm sending this from my tablet) is so infected that nothing opens except the phony virus fix program. It's not worth spending any money at all on, but there is a ton of documents, pictures, etc. I'd like to save. Thoughts?
I should add that I am minimally tech savy.

I suggest to download e.g. Knoppix Live CD (Linux system), burn it on CD, boot the infected computer from this CD and copy the necessary files to e.g. USB-Stick.

Knoppix can be downloaded here:

Just be careful that what you are backing up is not infected. It has been to a infected system so I would scan all those files before putting them on your new PC. Scan the jump drive or whatever you save them too.

Why don't you just remove the infection? Unfortunately, not being "tech savy" makes it more difficult, but you should be able to clean the system by booting from a rescue CD & running a full scan. Try Anvi:
