iexplorer.exe (x2)

February 25, 2011 at 12:49:09
Specs: Windows XP
Hi there, I have this virus that just won't go away we have tried everything we can think of to get rid of it but nothing works so far. I have done a little research and have found similar viruses but they are all 4+ years old posts.

What it starts off doing is popping up with this disk error spam thing just like a rouge virus. But what sounds like commercials started to play but nothing was open to play on. I checked the anti-virus (etrust) and it doesn't see anything so what ever it is is can walk right past it. I booted into safe mode and ran a couple of malware removers. Housecall, MBAM, Trojan Remover, Spybot S&D and they all found stuff except Trojan Remover which was a BIG shock because Trojan Remover is perfect for removing viruses like this, resetting policies and such that the others don't do so well at. After all the scans were done I looked in the task manager and saw 2 iexplorer.exe tasks running but there was no IE open so I killed them but they came back a minute later and kept coming back. I was still in safe mode when this was going on which I have never seen any virus run in safe mode like that. We have tried everything we can think of to get rid of this thing but so far no luck. I can't think of what else to do but reformat it but I thought I would ask and see if anyone has any suggestions to help get rid of this thing.

What I think it is a backdoor virus but I am not 100% sure of that.

Thanks for the help
Solecs

Hi,
It sounds like a backdoor trojan called Backdoor.Greybird or variant of it:

Thanks for the quick response MrGoodguy. That scan that mentioned Prevx I looked it up to see what other thought of it and it didn't get that great of reviews and people were saying that it ruined or infected there machine. a couple of them said that it came with a backdoor in it. If you have anything to say on behalf of it, it would be greatly appreciated.

Lets try this, Download Rkill from this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
Then download Malwarebytes update and run a full scan, removing all it finds.

That Rkill stopped those iexplorer.exe tasks and MBAM got a couple more things so I ran housecall and spybot S&D again then restarted and I haven't seen any of those iexplorer.exe things come back up so as far as I know it got it. Thanks for the help MrGoodguy.

Your most welcome. Thanks for letting me know, glad things are better.:-)
I suggest you do a full Malwarebytes scan in safe mode to catch anything that was missed when you get a chance.
