iexplore.exe causing my PC to slow down?

June 21, 2009 at 08:34:20
Specs: Windows XP
Hi,

The last months Internet Explorer has become slower and slower. It is ok when I start surfing, but after a while I notice that my PC has trouble viewing pages from the web. I looked at taskmanager and it turned out the memory usage for iexplore can reach extreme high values up to 250 MB. This cannot be normal, right?

I have read a lot of forums on the internet dealing with this problem, but I found different answers. I am using Ad-aware and performed a scan last week (same for AVG antivirus). Can someone help me?

I have added my hijackthis log:

I just openend one window for IE and visited one website. By clicking about 25 times on several links within the same website (same window - same tab) the PC has reached even 400 MB of my memory use. Closing the window removes the iexplore.exe from taskmanager.

I have 3 instances of explorer running and am using around 130 mb, I can push it easily up to 250mb if I open enough windows.

Go to IE >> Tools >> Internet Options >> under the General (tab),>> Browsing History >> Settings button.

Make sure disk space to use is not set over 50 mb ....

If you dont already have it, i would also run CCleaner from CCleaner.com

I have an issue where IEXPLORE.EXE is a running process but I don't have IE open and when I shut the process down it opens back up after a few minutes. Sometimes there is audio of some video or music that plays. The audio caught me off guard, but soon found it was IEXPLORE.EXE. I haven't found anything online to help me remove the virus causing this issue. AVG and Antivir can not find the cause. Also Adaware, Spybot SD nolonger open but HJT does so here's a log. Any help would great. Thanks all.

Just a guess but uninstall AVG8 and see if things improve?

You should not have 2 AV programs running on the same system at the same time .. They interferr and cause problems.

Other than that your HJT log looks clean.

----------

Please download combofix to your desktop. (MUST BE RUN FROM THE DESKTOP)

http://download.bleepingcomputer.co...

Please review the instructions here for running combofix.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/com...

Disable all active security programs before running combofix. (Real-Time Protection) These can cause combofix to freeze or not run properly.

Close all open programs.

Double click the combofix icon on your desktop to begin the scan and approve any warning messages you get.

Before the scan begins you may get a popup asking if you would like to install the Windows Recovery Console. At this time i would not install the recovery console.

Do not use you mouse or try to run any other programs while Combofix is running. This can cause combofix to freeze.

The scan will take between 20 minutes to an hour and at times may appear to be frozen. Once the scan completes combofix may reboot your computer to finish any removals when needed.

After the reboot a log should appear on your desktop. Please paste the complete contents of the log here in this post chain.
