iexplore virus?

June 10, 2010 at 15:18:30
Specs: Windows XP, core 2 duo, 3mg ram
All of a sudden, my pc is running very slow. One thing I noticed is that in task manager, iexplore.exe has 2 sessions running, even though I have one browser and only 1 tab in that browser open. I also noticed sometimes when I close my browser, iexplore continues to run in the background. Could this be a virus?

Seems odd since I have norten internet security and it's completely up to date. Any thoughts?

Usually there is only one iexplore.exe entry but there are definitely times when another one can arrive without there being any virus on the machine. I don't know the reason but it does happen every now and then - maybe the answer is in Google somewhere. If the machine is running normally you are probably OK.

Just the same, there would be nothing lost by downloading MalwareBytes freebie. Make sure it is updated before scanning. It can unearth things that virus checkers miss and won't clash with Norton.

With IE8 it is normal for there to be 2 instances of iexplore.exe. Your other problem I have not seen.

Just checked mine and there is only one iexplore.exe showing (Internet Explorer). The other one is explorer.exe (Windows Explorer). I have seen an extra iexplore.exe at odd times tho.
