IE error screen after attack attempt

Specs: Windows 7, 2.2 GHz / 4061 MB
While using IE (I rarely use anything other than FF), Avast gave me a warning of an attack attempt. I was taken out of the program I was in and now see a mostly blank screen with Windows Security shown in the upper left hand corner. The URL listed there is followed by a long string. When I try to close the window, a warning box pops up that says my system is at risk of crashing. Pressing Cancel "to prevent it" leaves me with the blank screen. Avast caught the attempt and a Malwarebytes Full Scan shows no infection. Is it safe to go ahead and close the IE browser page? Or is this error screen part of the attack attempt itself, as I've seen in the past? I have no problems using FF, which was also open at the same time as IE. Any help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Turn the computer off, either by pushing the off button once or by holding it in, until it shuts down.

Reboot into safe mode, update & run MBAM quick scan again.

Thank you for the reply John. I went ahead and shut down normally last night and reran Malwarebytes this morning, with no infected files. I got Virtumundo (sp?) a couple of years back and was concerned about something similar with this problem. Fortunately, that seems to not be the case.

"Or is this error screen part of the attack attempt itself"
Yes it is shendon & if one fiddles, that is usually it, you are infected.
Whenever one starts saying > what the heck is going on to oneself < shutting down the fastest way is best.
