I can't open any of the files on my computer.

Specs: Windows Vista
I cannot open any files on my computer. This is a problem that has seemingly gotten worse ever since my computer one day rather selfishly decided to contract some kind of virus. (At least I think it was some kind of virus--I cannot say for certain, as I am not particularly tech-savvy...) All of my shortcuts suddenly disappeared, and I cannot find any of my documents or other such saved files. I can however find program files using the search bar in the start menu, but when I try to open them I get a message saying something along the lines of
"Windows cannot access the specific device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
I only have one profile on my computer, and since the same message appears for any of the files I attempt to download, i have not been able to try any downloadable anti-malware devices.

I feel I should mention that while I cannot directly access firefox, by clicking an internet link in
the security warning box that appears after clicking on the downloaded file entitled "firefox setup 4.0.1" I can gain access to the internet--which is in fact how I managed to write this here.

download malwarebytes from malwarebytes.org

rename mbam file(from download) by changing its extension to .bat

aka rename mbam.exe to mbam.bat (or mbam.com) this is to bypass a file association problem, let me know if it fails to run.
