I can't install any program to attempt a fix

Specs: Windows XP
file ftdisk.sys is corupted. I can't run certain programs such as MS word, powerpoint, etc. Computer won't allow me to load any programs to attempt a fix.

If an infection is preventing you from downloading any programs, or running any files such as an.exe (executable), let’s terminate the malware that's running on the computer and restore some of its functions.

[If you cannot download files, the malware may be blocking the attempt. You need to download the file to a clean computer and then transfer it to the infected one using a USB flash drive, or external media (an external drive or a CD)]

Let's get started...

Please restart your computer.
Tap the F8 key on the keyboard repeatedly until you are presented with the Boot Options screen
Using the arrow keys, select the Safe Mode with Networking option
Press the Enter key
Log in to the account you normally use

In Safe Mode with Networking, download iExplore.exe or eXplorer.exe, which are renamed copies of RKill:

Save the file to the Desktop, and double-click on it. (For Windows 7, select: Run as Administrator)
Ignore any messages, and allow the file to run until the command window closes.

Try running the Vipre Rescue program. It runs from the command prompt, and will scan for, and remove most malware, including rootkits. It normally runs when other programs won't.

Vipre Rescue download:

If the file does not download, copy/paste the following >without the quotes or brakets< into the address bar of your browser

Save to the Desktop

Double click on the VIPRE Rescue icon
When it asks if you want to extract VIPRE Rescue Scanner to your computer, click yes.

When the "WinZip Self- Extractor" prompt appears, click: Unzip
By default, it unzips to C:
Make sure the checkbox for "When done unzipping open: .\deep_scan.bat" is checked
After the files are unzipped, click OK

VIPRE Rescue will now run automatically and perform a deep (full) scan. This may take a while.

When it's done, type exit and press enter to close the program.

Without a reboot, download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (black button with green and white icon) Save to the Desktop:

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. (For Vista or Windows 7, select: Run as Administrator)

Run Malwarfebytes’ AntiMalware and update the program.
Once updated, select Perform Full Scan and click the scan button.

When the scan finishes, click OK in the message box, and you will see the results of the scan.

Click the Remove Selected button to get rid of the malware.

When Malwarebytes finishes, you may be prompted to reboot. If so, reboot.

Please post the Malwarebytes log in your reply so we can see where we are at, and plan any additional removal strategy, if necessary.
