Before playing with the registry try this first.

1.)Open the File Types dialog from any Explorer window -- use My Documents or My Computer (Tools | Folder Options | File Types Tab).

2.)Scroll down to where .EXE would be in the alphabetical order and make certain .EXE is not there (if it is, then edit it there by changing the association to Application).
Finally, select the New button, type in EXE for the extension and select the Advanced button. From the list pick "Application."

for your safety please make a backup file of your registry if you desire.

please make a restore point before doing this

Second option is to copy the text below betwen the lines, without the lines and the white space at the begining. past it into notepad. then save the file as fixerexe.reg on the desktop. make sure that you save it as a save as not a text. then return to the desktop and double click. then select ok to merge.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"

@="\"%1\" %*"

@="\"%1\" %*"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\ShimLayer Property Page]

if you are uncomfortable with this, you can also try to return to a restore point prior to your problem and see if that fixes it.

let us know how it goes. good luck
