Solved How to unencrypt a folder that was encrypted on an old PC.

Specs: Windows 8.1
i have changed my pc and copied a folder from my old pc that was encrypted. now i cannot open the folder or un-encrypt it (the unencrypt box is grayed out). My old pc is dead so how do i un-encrypt my files? Thanks.

The ability to decrypt the folder and files would depend on what you used to encrypt them. Did you use EFS?

How were you able to access the folder to make a copy of it?

I am not sure as I do not actually remember encrypting the folder, however it has the encrypt box ticked!

When it happens without your knowledge, it was probably caused by an infection.

Do you mean you had encrypted files and folders on that computer but just don't remember encrypting that one or you don't remember encrypting any of them? Maybe the folder is just corrupted. You might try copying it over again.
