I reinstalled Vista, with WD My Passport external hard drive disconnected, and now I want to reload documents and pictures into my computer. How can I run a virus check on My Passport only before I reload?
Assuming you have already installed an antivirus/security suite you simply need to attach the drive to the computer and then run a scan on it using the antivirus program - most give you the option to right-click the drive letter and do a scan. There's no way you can scan the drive without attaching it to a host computer of one sort or another, whether it's your reinstalled one or someone else's. Difficult to explain in detail since no two AV softwares are exactly the same, and I don't know which one your using. Just open your antivirus software, choose "Manual Scan" and select your external drive as the target.
In any case, if there are any virus infections on your external drive your antivirus should warn you while files are being copied, and it will stop the infected file being copied.
Thanks, Johnr and Phil22. This is helpful. message edited by ColdinCanada
