I didn't do any of my removal in safe mode. Just executed the steps for diabling hotfix process (cntl alt delete to start task manager) then kill the process. Started a new process for Explorer. Found out where the executable was and deleted it. Then downloaded Malwarebytes and tool from Microsoft--ran both in sucession. That seems to have gotten rid of the nasty little critter by finding what was left of it in the registry..

That sounds like what we need to do, but we need dummy step by steps:
How did you do the process you described below?
>>Started a new process for Explorer. Found out where the executable was and deleted it.<<
We have Malwarebytes - it found nothing on the intial scan - do we need to run the full scan (takes a lot longer than 8 minutes...). Also, what is the other tool from Microsoft you mentioned below?
>>Then downloaded Malwarebytes and tool from Microsoft--ran both in sucession.<<

Think Point which is also known as the ThinkPoint virus is part of a fake Microsoft Security Essentials Alert. Think Point is being advertised as one of the five removal tool to get rid of any infection found on the computer. Initial infection will result to a malfunction of Windows desktop, removing all icons and displaying only a fake alert message.
