how to block access to a folder in an externa

November 22, 2011 at 18:25:45
Specs: Windows XP
I have an external HDD and have created a Folder with vital information where I have saved Excel, Word, pictures in various file formats and I am going to give the HDD to another employee to transfer data onto it but I don't want them to be able to view or save, or copy any files from the folder I have created. How do I protect and stop them from accessing this info in this folder?
The other employee will be transferring other file onto this HDD. And I am using Windows XP.

The encryption of files and folders is only supported with the NTFS file system. If the drive is FAT32, which is common with external drives, it will not work. FAT32 has no security, anyone having physical access can do whatever they wish. If that is the case you should find some other way to have the files added to the drive.

Sorry guys, I'm no computer geek - how do I find out its a FAT32 folder and able to be encrypted. To be specific, the folder is used to backup my Outlook Archive Folders and the Hard Drive from my PC. Can you give me the instructions in plane and simple english please....
A step by step process would be much simply.

Go to My Computer and open it select the external drive you are dealing with, and right click it. Go down the list and select Properties. In this window it will tell you the file system for this external drive.
