Specs: Windows XP
hi. my laptop's win xp operating system has been infected by a virus and i want to recover all my valuable & important data from the hard disk drives. the last thing i saw on my screen was called 'happy birthday' which i believe to be the name of the virus caught from a VCD i was watching and now just a blank black screen appears when i switch on my laptop.
i would very much appreciate if someone could help me recover.
many thanks.

The simplest cause of that message is usually the machine trying to boot from a non-bootable disk in one of the drives. Make sure there are no disks in any of the drives (cd, floppy, memory card, etc)
