Secure firewall; strict security logon procedures are good starting points; and include decent pest removal software updated frequently. There is no truly hack proof system in the general world; even the big boys (government included) can be hacked by determined villains...
Others here with more expertise in security will (I hope...) add to my minimal basics above..

I think #3 from sluc is very appropo, applicable... All to easy to let backdoor entry apps get in via phishing attacks/emails and thus hack away...
check what is written about blocking websites on www.mspy.com - they provide some features on how it can be possible to access websites and block them
