Solved How can I remove PUP.Optional.NeoBar virus?

July 15, 2017 at 13:17:39
Specs: Windows 7, Intel Core i3-4350/3.60GHz
So I currently run Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials for malware and virus protection. For some reason I cannot get rid of NeoBar. I detect and remove it with Malwarebytes, then it just comes back again and again.

I also attempted running RKill from Bleeping Computer which detects and temporarily stops any detected virus program. It was unable to detect NeoBar.

Would running the scan in safe mode solve the problem or is there another solution?

Scan in safe mode. Also turn off system restore - as when it's enabled it may simply restore the pest - believing it's legit and missing - when you reboot.

Also download and run JRT - Junkware Removal Tool. It installs to desktop from where you run it. It opens into a small dos style window. Follow the instructions therein. It will reboot the system as part of its process.

And get a decent AV program. MSE isn't very good.

Also when the system is clean, re-enable system restore.

Rember too, whenever you install anything downloaded off the web use the manual/custom mode - NOT the proffered default automatic option. Watch for any pre checked boxes and uncheck all of them, other than the one for the utility itself. This way you avoid all manner of unwanted system changes, and nuisance/pest ware; all of which you neither need nor want. This advice applies to many of the malware/pest pware removal, anti-virus utilities as well; as sadly they too arrive with stuff you don't need nor want.

Thanks for the suggestions all! JRT is a nice little program! I noticed on the log that it got rid of:
Successfully deleted: C:\ProgramData\mcfdffbhlklbeojcnlemomkimlemlpob (Folder)
Pretty sure that was the name of the folder originally housing the NeoBar garbage.

After doing scans in safe mode, NeoBar hasn't reappeared yet. Fingers crossed.

I'll try out BitDefender as well!

There are few anti-virus programs that pick up browser malware. JRT is one and ADWCleaner is the other. They often find different things so run this as well:
(blue "Download Now" button on right).
Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run the program. Use the "Scan" button, followed by the "Clean" button.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
