Why not ask your friend for the password and/or method/program used to lock it?

I trust you will understand that we have to be a bit careful with requests of this sort because we have no way to determine whether you are the rightful owner of the machine.

OK I am sorry. I was only doing my best to help. I try and help out because other people have helped me. All I know is my Acer had the hard drive password once and it was a bad hard drive. I read it again just to see if they didn't mean Windows password. I am thinking they mean the same error I had. I was not able to do anything write 0's format the drive was locked and nothing could be done.

You can re-install windows, and during the initial setup, be
sure to kill the partition, and create a new partition. I would
make it a slightly different size, so that the OS is forced to re-
partition and update the disk tables. Then install windows.

I hope that you do not have any data on here that needs to be
rescued.

But I am also wondering if this is a special password, or the
general Windows 2000 login screen that you are referring to. If
that is the case, then if you have the administrator account
information, you can login as the administrator and change
the password in there within the Computer Management
administration tool.

If it is a Harddrive password NOTHING can be done to clear the password. The drive is locked like write protected. The OP said HDD password so I am assumeing it is what I had. Noone seems to believe me.

On re-reading the original post it does seem that it means there is a HDD lock
on it. Maybe I'm getting too old to interpret internet speak. Apologies for misunderstanding - I've edited out my associated responses.

My response #1 still applies, and the poster has not come back.

Happy Chrismas to all.

Seems that the OP has lost interest in his/her own question. :)
