have virus on computer windows xp

Specs: Windows XP, unsure 256-512
I have a virus on computer, with windows xp os. When I try to open internet it doesn't allow me, therefore I can't go to any websites to download anything. (note says it's a trojan virus) It takes me to the virus screen and does not let me do anything where the internet is involved. I also have avast on computer. Can you please help??? I don't really want to clean off the entire computer unless I really have too. Too much info on it. Took it about a year ago to someone to fix, and they installed an updated version of windows xp (not 2010) and other microsoft office professional programs that I don't have the disk to re-install.

try trapping f8 on bootup and select safe mode with networking..
Once in safemode, download and run Malwarebytes:

run it in a full scan and fix all it finds, then

open avast and get it to do a bootscan on reboot. Move all it finds to the chest.

thanks for your advice. I was able to trap f8 on bootup as suggested. It allowed me to restore the computer back to past settings. (doing it the other way, did not clear virus & didn't allow me to access the internet). Once restored, I was able to access the internet and download the malware, ccleaner, and antispyware, also was able to boot scan avast. Computer is back to normal.

Thanks for your help!!!!
