google redirect problem

Gateway laptop / Mx6920
March 13, 2009 at 09:08:59
Specs: Windows XP
I am being redirected to advertising sites when I click on google search results. I can see I am originally directed to the selected destination and while loading I get forwarded to the ad website. I have to hit the back button to go the the website I originally requested. I have run avg and it found nothing, then I installed and ran the malwarebytes as this website suggested and it found one trojan which came right back as soon as I did my next google search. Hijack this finds nothing. I have log files for both.

I tried using yahoo instead of google for a change, doesn't matter, I still get redirected. I ran malwarebytes' again and it found the same Trojan.Daonol, how do I find the source that keeps putting it back?

Ok. From what I can see on your scans and looking through some of the history of this detection, it looks like something is hiding in memory and causing the file to be re-installed as soon as it is deleted.

I need to see if it is detecting the HJT program itself or just looking at the name. To find this out, we need to change the name of the HJT program. To do this, navigate to the "C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis" folder. There should be a file in there called HijackThis.exe. Change the name of this program to something like scanit.exe or findit.exe. Once you have done this, double click on the program to run it again and re-post the log here please. If we get different results, then it was just looking for HJT to run and hiding itself from it. If we still can't find it, we will have to go hunting for it ourselves. :)

I renamed, ran, and posted the Hjackthis log file as requested. I did not run malwarebytes again, was I supposed to?

I ran malwarebytes and was surprised it did not find the same trojan as it did on previous occasions. Unfortunately, I tried a google search shortly thereafter and I'm still getting redirected. Here is the log file:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.34

I went to the suggested website and I don't exactly understand what I should download to kill the original Trojan.Daonol; which is no longer being picked up by malwarebytes.

Which program am I supposed to download?

OK, due to the nature of Rootkit infections, you are probably still infected.

Please read through these instructions and print them out if needed. If you have any questions, please ask them before starting this procedure. Please do the steps in the order that they are listed for the best results. Also, although it may seem like the infection is cleaned after performing these steps, please stay with me until I let you know that your machine is "all-clear" for best results.

Here is what I need you to do. First of all, download DDS from here and save it to your desktop.

Next, download GMER from here. Be sure to click the button marked "Download EXE" to download GMER as a randomly named .exe file. This is needed as some rootkits look for and hide from GMER or prevent it from running.

Once you have both of those downloaded, please disable any script blocking program you might have and run DDS.scr. When it is done, DDS will open two (2) logs. They are named DDS.txt and Attach.txt. Please save both reports to your desktop.

Then run GMER. If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO. In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked for you. Please Uncheck the following boxes: Sections, IAT/EAT, any Drives/Partitions other than the Systemdrive (typically C:\), and Show All (be sure not to miss this one!) Now click on the Scan button and wait for it to finish. Once it is done scanning, click the "Save..." button and in the file name area type in gmerscan.txt. ROOTKIT SCANNERS CAN GENERATE FALSE POSITIVES. DO NOT TAKE ANY ACTION ON ANY ITEMS MARKED "<------ROOTKIT!"

Please copy and paste the contents of the dds.txt log to this thread. As for the attach.txt log and gmerscan.txt logs, please send them as an attachment to the email address I have provided for you in the private message that I just sent you.

Once I have a chance to check these logs I will be able to better determine what our next steps should be.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Hi SongCloud. I'm actually getting very similar problems as the original poster here. I've followed your directions, also hoping to get some help on the issue. I can send you the Attach.txt and gmerscan.txt logs to you via email if you want them. Below is a copied version of the DDS.txt that I ran. Thanks for you help. I really appreciate it, as this computer is actually a work computer and cannot have these issues to properly run.
