Google Redirect, etc.

Specs: Windows XP

I have an issue with Google searches being redirected. It started about two days ago, seemingly out of nowhere - things were fine one night, then infected the next day when I turned my computer on. The main issue is searches being sent to random ad sites - it happens on Google, Yahoo, etc., and happens whether I use IE or Firefox.

It's also been rendering my computer extremely slow. It usually takes a few tries, and about ten minutes, before finally getting an Internet Explorer screen to open. I used Ctrl+Alt+Del to check Task Manager, and saw one program, svchost.exe, taking up an inordinate amount of memory (about 200,000 K). I closed that and the computer seemed to run faster. But if I don't do that, things are very slow.

I also can't access the Microsoft Update site. Also strange - but maybe unrelated (?) - is that I suddenly lost volume on my computer. The speakers are working fine, they're brand new...but there's no volume icon showing up in the taskbar. I don't know if the malware is affecting that, too.

I've tried a few different programs - AdAware, Spybot, Hitman. They each found a few issues, but didn't resolve the problem.

Any advice at all would be very much appreciated!
