Finding Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures?

January 12, 2010 at 15:11:05
Specs: Windows 7
I have the following 3 VMWare images given to
me:

FTP Server (running Windows 2000 Server
SP4 with IIS 5.0)
Web server (running Windows 2000 Server
SP4 with IIS 5.0)
Workstation (running XP SP2)

I need to locate 2 CVE's for each - and I'm a
bit unsure about what this means, and how I
would go about finding them. Any ideas?

Many thanks

The way you asked the question has all the characteristics of being a homework assignment. Is it?

Well yeah :p I don't want the 'answers', just a little guidance
on how I would go about searching for these CVE's. Our
lecture notes are a bit unclear on how we would even go about
finding these CVE's, although I do understand what they are.

Just wondering what sort of vulnerabilities might be common
on a system, I've been looking up NetBIOS and Port 139
(looking at the XP SP2 machine at the moment, and this port
is open with NetBIOS running) but it seems XP SP2 has fixed
that.

I guess I could just look on the CVE list I have been given, but
there are thousands..

Perhaps the use of a vulnerability scanner would make life a bit easier..
