Solved does ad aware conflict with kaspersky

May 7, 2013 at 13:57:03
Specs: Windows XP, AMD Athlon 1.51GHz 512MB
I used to have AVG Free running in conjunction with both AdAware and Spybot. I now have Kaspersky (free, incidentally, if you do Barclays online banking) and am wondering if I should uninstall both AdAware and Spybot as I assume they are no longer needed.
Thank you for your advice on this.

You can have as many as you wish if they are only called up to do a scan "on demand". You should not have more than one AV running in the background all the time.

From what you are saying you need to decide between Kaspersky and AVG.

Personally I feel that Adaware and SpyBot are a bit dated. If you want a freebie to run if you think something has crept past your AV then MalwareBytes is very good. ADWCleaner can also be useful to clear out any unwanted toolbars (or their remnants) that you might have collected.

If you mean the newer versions of Adaware, which include the antivirus program as well, then no, it is not a good idea to have it installed at the same time as Kaspersky. Generally speaking Kaspersky will warn you and will not install if it finds an other security program running on the system so if it has already installed ok then you can assume that there should be a problem, but assumptions can be wrong so I would personally remove Adaware and Spybot as being superfluous.

Looks like I was outdated (wrong) about Adaware - things have obviously moved on since I used it years ago. If it runs in the background, then what I said about only having one program that does this applies to the current Adaware too.
