Specs: Windows 7
CPU running high again same problem a couple weeks ago (wuauserv). You helped me out big time! Problem was missing updates. Ran update software updates all present.Tried to follow steps given to me then. No luck! This is driving me crazy. Tried running Trend, Malwarebytes, Defender (full scan) no hits. Junkware tool, freezes up. CPU runs 100% on freeze.

Windows updates missing from 7-22-16 to 8-10 -16. Have been very careful to get update every day or almost, after last happening. Ran windows update diagnostic, said fixed everything but service registration) missing or corrupt. Windows update reports no new updates. Where can I get newest updatepack, ran 16.7.2016.0 left over from Johnw's help. Don't know were to go from here. Do most of my household business from this machine.

This will happen every second Tuesday of the month. Yesterday I experienced similar condition although I let it run and it does not impact my work on the machine; I just let is run (for hours), eventually it comes up with updates to install.

Since you seem to have a performance problem when the update service is running, I suggest to turn off "Check for updates" and run the service manually every month.
In the "Windows Update" Panel > Change settings > In the "Important Update section" select "Never check for updates".

Run the "Check for Updates" manually in the weekend or after your work (evening/night)

sluc about an hour ago I tried that, problem taken care of in part, wuauserv stays off, (CPU stays normal). No melt downs, now I can at least use my machine. When you do go for updates do you get them ok?

Yes I get the updates and install them if I have no work on the PC.

sluc thanks much for taking the time to help. Like things to work as they should, but you verified for me this is a good work around. Thanks again
